Allied Airforce (Update #1)
Subject description: "Clear the skies and the ground will follow"
The Allied Airforce More than just support
In the GWWII the Allied airforces were smashed, relegated to defence of the few objectives they could defend from the massive Red Airforce, they fought valiantly in both jet aircraft, and whatever came to hand.
What came to hand coincidentally included many aircraft that appeared in our second world war. This included such examples of pre-jet engineering as these Supermarine Spitfires.
Unfortunately, even these forces did not fare well and at the end of the GWWII Allied fixed-wing aviation had yet to show at the front. These defeats highlighted to the Allies the need to field Aircraft (specifically fixed-wing or variable-geometry aircraft) in the event of a future war. in the 60s with the ascension of the new Soviet Union this research was boosted by the increase in Military funding, resulting in a complete arsenal of advanced frontline aircraft.
The Hurricane attack jet
The mainstay of the Allied frontline support forces, armed with a set of un-guided rocket projectiles, the Hurricane can be considered the "standard" Allied aircraft, capable of light attacks and reconnisance missions at speeds surpassed only by purpose-built interceptors.
Available as soon as an airstrip is readied, the Hurricane is ideal for making an impact earlier in the battle.
The Privateer
As soviet Yak and MiG fighters dominated the european skies in the 50s, the allied leaders were left with an imprint of the devastation unmolested airpower could cause. The city of dresden, it seems, was destined to be flattened Hitler or not; the center of Dresden was razed by TU-16 "Badger" aircraft of Soviet Frontal Aviation, using parachute-retarded explosives nicknamed "Parabombs". The sight of such loss of life drove the Allies to prepare for such an eventality again, and to be armed against it.
Enter the privateer, a fast, agile interceptor aircraft armed with four long range Air-t-o-Air guided missiles, capable of destroying the heavy, lumbering soviet bombers with ease, European citizens can sleep soundly in their beds, unless one should fly overhead...
The missiles are also Effective against Soviet Fighters and Attack aircraft, meaning that just because you're small doesn't mean you're safe.
The A10
Apaches may have been good for destroying single tanks on the battlefield, but the fact that they took so much time to return to base and reload the tanks were hot on their heels. Apahes were also vulnerable to ground SAM fire. Although they could sustain several hits, it was usually difficult for them to escape the range of such weapons, leading to many un-necessary losses of both machines and crew.
The A10 - a license-built US design - promises to solve these problems, not only is it durable enough to withstand multiple nearby SAM detonations* , the A10 solves many problems seen in the Apache. However, it's weapory is the centerpiece. A 30mm, rotary-barrel, link-fed 30mm cannon. The "Avenger" promises to do just that and avenge the lost Apache pilots on Soviet armour. A single, good burst can destroy or cripple a heavy tank (although results are less spectacular versus moving targets), the A10 carries enough ammo for two such strafing runs before it must return, less munitions than an Apache perhaps, but more powerful definitely.
Cost=1600 (may be increased)
Speed=17
Health=200
Armour=medium
Armament=1x30mm 'Avenger' cannon
*(contrary to poular belief SAMs rarely ever "hit", they instead explode and destroy the targets with a shotgun spray of shrapnel)
There will be more... _________________ Yes, work on MV continues. It is not forgotten. QUICK_EDIT
How is A2A combat done? Do the planes automatically fire or do you have to click to attack each individual plane? _________________ Please, read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
Blue cockpits play out well in the mod. Enough personal experience showed me that it's not that bad looking when you play with a completely different color scheme. QUICK_EDIT
I think I'll be using conman's cameos over the ones I have now Any feedback on the units/their roles? _________________ Yes, work on MV continues. It is not forgotten. QUICK_EDIT
click - to - attack is annoying, there any way to make em attack on their own ? _________________ Please, I DON'T read the signature rules of the forum. QUICK_EDIT
I will admit they are fun to use, they're light and nippy with a good sting, you do need 3 or 4 to kill a pp though...
And IIRC you need at least 12-14 (that actually shoot) to kill a CY.
ATM they're also bad against armoured vehicles, which may or may not change. _________________ Yes, work on MV continues. It is not forgotten. QUICK_EDIT
Unfortunately, until there's a way round it, yes. Very unfortunately as I like proper planes. No I'm not moving to gens I can't 3d model _________________ Yes, work on MV continues. It is not forgotten. QUICK_EDIT
In name and in spirit, in the Real world war II after Hurricanes had outlived their usefulness as frontline fighters they were equipped with 40mm cannons, bombs or rockets and used to wreak havoc in German rear areas or armoured units.
Although the Hurricane isn't devastatingly effective it should ensure the soviet players are a bit less offensive early game and must protect their valuable power plants, refineries and radars... _________________ Yes, work on MV continues. It is not forgotten. QUICK_EDIT
