The Invader Bomb Drone, or XD-8 by SSIA designation is an explosive suicide unit.
The origins of the Bomb Drone are hard to trace. However, it is commonly assumed that the Bomb Drone was designed primarily to attack convoys, infantry formations and overwhelm base defenses.
Indeed, the first recorded attack of Bomb Drones on the SSIA was outside the Berlin District in the early phases of the Main War. SSIA forces were entrenched and had held off large Invader assaults for a week, and when it seemed like the Invaders were about to withdraw, a massive force of Bomb Drones, totaling around 100 of them. The front of the SSIA line held, with several Laser Turrets and Guard Posts being able to stop most of the drones. However, the rear fell, with the Bomb Drones detonating on the hardened shells of the Guard Posts, leveling them. Once inside the base, the rest of the drones began to detonate on the base's power plants and training facilities. With the defenses offline, Invader forces were dropship inserted into the base, Corruption Drones taking over the remaining buildings and light infantry finishing off the tired and few remaining SSIA soldiers.
The Bomb Drone moves via an omnidirectional thruster that can move the drone in excess of 140km/H, much faster than any other ground vehicle or naval vessel, for that matter. Once in range of a target, the Bomb Drone activates an energy pulse which causes the reactor within the drone to explode violently. Although non-nuclear in nature, the explosion is extremely powerful, capable of dealing tremendous amounts of collateral damage.
Notes:
The XD-8 is the fastest military drone on Earth. Moving much faster than any other vehicle on the field, Invader commanders can easily move their drones as to avoid incoming fire and prevent interception attempts.
The XD-8's reactor detonation can destroy an entire company of infantry, level a building or blow up a tank without much trouble. Due to their low cost, when one drone doesn't cut it, a horde will almost always do the job.
The XD-8 is lightly armored. Although reasonably protected from small arms fire, XD-8 Bomb Drones are extremely vulnerable to artillery fire and aerial attack. Invader commanders must bank instead on the speed of the Bomb Drone to get it to its destination.
However, some of the finer details seem to blur a bit ingame.
